Right Speech and Skillful Communication
In this episode, I explore the concept of skillful communication, drawing parallels between the Buddhist principle of right speech and practical communication strategies. I begin by examining the Zen koan "The Short Staff" to illustrate how our perception of reality is shaped by interdependence and impermanence, suggesting we apply this lens to our self-view. I then delve into the Eightfold Path, focusing on right speech as a means to foster peace and harmony, emphasizing that skillful communication involves considering not just what we say, but why and how we say it. I introduce three communication styles—passive, aggressive, and assertive—highlighting assertive communication, particularly through the "I-message" formula ("I feel... when you... I would like you to..."), as the most effective approach for genuine connection and understanding in all relationships.
