Learning To Live Artfully
In this episode, I explore the concept of living life artfully, contrasting it with utilitarian thinking that assigns value based on purpose. I discuss how artful living means doing things for the joy of the activity itself, much like a painter paints or a dancer dances without a specific utilitarian outcome. I introduce the Japanese art of kintsugi as an example of finding value in repair and imperfection, and I delve into the Buddhist concept of "purposeless purpose" or "meaningless meaning," suggesting we observe causality rather than seeking inherent meaning in events. This mindset shift, exemplified by the mold on bread existing due to causes and conditions rather than for a specific purpose, can lead to a more profound appreciation of existence and our interconnectedness.
